Three leaders of civil society organizations have joined the ASAP Advisory Board, once entirely composed of academics. Raymond Baker, President of Global Financial Integrity, Alnoor Ladha, Co-founder of The Rules, and Leila Janah, Founder and CEO of Samasource will sit on the 21-person board, providing direction and advice to ASAP’s Board of Directors and staff.
Raymond Baker is best known for founding Global Financial Integrity, one of the most prominent NGOs calling for international action to curb illicit financial flows. In his book, Capitalism\’s Achilles Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free-Market System, Baker introduced many readers to the problem of illicit financial flows, which was little recognized in 2005 when the book was published. Since then, Global Financial Integrity has put forward widely-cited reports, estimating the amount of money flowing illegally across borders at both the regional and global level.
Leila Janah leads Samasource, a nonprofit organization that connects people living in poverty in South countries with \”microwork\” — computer-based short-term jobs from around the world. 3,800 people have found work through Samasource, according to the organization\’s website. Janah also co-founded Samahope, a crowdfunding website for medical treatments for people in South countries who cannot afford the care they need. Prior to founding these organizations, Janah worked at the Stanford Program on Global Justice, where she co-founded Incentives for Global Health with Thomas Pogge.
Alnoor Ladha is co-founder of The Rules, an advocacy organization seeking to mobilize people around the world and especially in the Global South to address the structural forces perpetuating poverty and inequality, like illicit financial flows, land grabs, and climate change. Ladha is also Partner and Head of Strategy at Purpose, a social movement incubator. Pogge sits on the board of The Rules, and Ladha\’s colleague Martin Kirk, Global Campaigns Director at The Rules, recently spoke at an ASAP UK conference on illicit financial flows.
