Know Your Rights India Internship: Application Deadline Extended to March 1

Empower access to social entitlements in India.

Background: ASAP is working to launch a collaborative website, Know Your Rights India, with the goal of presenting all the rights, benefits, and entitlements of residents of India, with a comprehensive yet easy-to-understand explanation of how they can be realized. India has extensive anti-poverty and social protection programs; however, many people never realize these rights because of lack of education and other barriers. The problem of access is greatest for the very poor and marginalized, who need access to social benefits the most. Government agencies, NGOs, and individuals will be able to build and improve upon the Know Your Rights site. After the website is launched, ASAP activists in India will begin recruiting volunteers throughout the country who can then provide training on the Rights website to those for whom access is a challenge.

Description: Interns will play a leading role in the development of the Know Your Rights India website, researching national social protection programs, contributing to site layout, and even building the site itself. Depending on their location, interns may also be involved in recruiting members of NGOs and state agencies to contribute content to the site. Interns will also help design an outreach strategy for building contacts with suitable partners and fundraising.

ASAP welcomes applications from around the world and volunteers from India are especially welcome. Interns can choose to work remotely from their universities or in-person with the KYRI team both at Yale and Delhi University. Interns will be expected to work for at least three months for ten to twenty hours a week.

Requirements (any two):

  • Web development skills
  • Experience with or interest in policy or legal research
  • Fundraising abilities
  • Ability to solve problems independently
  • Knowledge of Indian government agencies and civil society a plus

Besides volunteers, KYRI will hire 5 interns with the following responsibilities:

  • Fundraising
  • Rights literacy
  • Labor & urban governance
  • Data collection
  • Website development
